Belize Myth Busting
Belize is an Island
False. Belize is a part of the isthmus connecting North and South America and therefore it’s part of the Central America mainland. However Belize has many beautiful islands off it’s coast. In fact we own one of them.
Belize is Located in the Caribbean
True. Although many people think of the Carribbean in terms of Jamaica, Cuba, and the Virgin Islands, the Carribean consists of the surrounding coasts as well.
Belize is in South America
False. Technically Central America is the Southernmost portion of the North American continent. So if anything you could say that Belize is in North America. Of course no one really considers Central America to be part of either continent.
Belize is part of Honduras
False. Belize was once the colony called British Honduras, but it is not a part of the modern day country of Honduras (in fact they don’t even share a border). Unlike its neighbors, Belize retains English as its official language and remains a part of the British Commonwealth (something in common with Canada, Australia, and many other former Britsh colonies).
