When guests are either leaving for our island or returning from the island, they spend one night at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City. Located on the Northern Highway, it is about 3 miles from downtown and 10 miles from the airport.
Many of our guests arrive early or stay late and they end up eating other restaurant meals that are not a part of their all-inclusive package with us. The most obvious place to eat is the Sahara Grill, which is right across the street from the hotel. They don’t serve breakfast, but they do serve lunch and dinner.
Fortunately, it’s a pretty good restaurant. They serve good Middle Eastern food, and the establishment is run by a family originally from Lebanon. We love it; all of our guides eat here all of the time since we live only a block away. It’s also not bad for vegetarians, which is quite rare in Belize.
They offer all of the traditional Mediterranean dishes: Wings, Falafel, Tabbouleh, Hummus, Kafta, Kabob, Lamb, Kibbi, and Baba Ghanuj. They even serve beer and wine in addition to sodas, bottled water, and coffee.
Here’s their menu from May of 2016. Remember, these prices are in Belize dollars. To compute US dollars, cut it in half.
We have owned and operated a Belize adventure company since 1986. Our Belize private island, Long Caye at Glover’s Reef, is very remote. Because of this, we can’t sell rooms by the night, the boat only goes 2 days a week. So our packages are all inclusive, and we also include hotels and meals in Belize City on each end of the island trip.
For the last fifteen years at least we have taken our guests to the Chon Saan Palace after coming off of the island. IMO this is the best restaurant in the city, and I have tried almost all of them, since we live there part of the year. To call it Chinese food doesn’t do it justice, since there are so many mediocre Chinese restaurants in the world. This is the best Chinese food you have ever had. It’s fresh, the recipes are fantastic, there are many, many choices for the vegetarian and carnivore alike. I have taken groups of thirty people there so many times. Everyone loves it. And the service is excellent. It’s a locals restaurant. If you are in Belize City, take a cab to Chon San Palace. You won’t be disappointed. Or call them up, they also deliver!
I got back a few days ago from my whirlwind tour of Belize lodges. I found out near the end that I had toured 33 inns in less than a week. After a while, fancy hotels all start to look the same, and if it wasn’t for my pictures I wouldn’t be able to keep them straight in my mind. We saw a LOT of hotel rooms in 5 days. But one stands out for its charm and grace: Victoria House on Ambergris Caye.
If you want to go somewhere and just have your eyes soothed by sheer gorgeousness every second of the day, spend some time here. We arrived very late in the day, so I didn’t get the pictures I wish I had gotten, but still, the magic of the place shows through, I think. It has a plantation style design unique in Belize. I have resolved I am going to get shutters in my own house after seeing this magnificent inn.
And the restaurant! We had dinner there. The food was superb, the service was impeccable. There was a couple sitting on the patio when we arrived who had just gotten engaged. They were telling everyone, including the hoard of passing travel agents. They were so happy. I can see why he popped the question at that moment, what else could he do in a place like this?
