Mayan Ruins Belize Tours

Xunantunich One-Day Excursion

Slickrock Adventures has specialized in Belize adventures since 1986. Xunantunich is one of our favorite cultural sites in the country.

We explore Xunantunich Mayan ruin as part of our Belize Adventure Week multi-day trip. This full-week adventure tour includes a guided afternoon at these fascinating ruins, along with other activities such as kayaking through caves, jungle hiking, whitewater kayaking, and three days on our private island for sea kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayak surfing, sport fishing, kayak fishing, paddleboarding, and board surfing.

We also offer a one-day trip to Xunantunich for groups of minimum 4, with a maximum of 14. This charter tour is described below.

“This trip was truly adventurous. I was surprised that I learned so much about the Mayan culture through the Xunantunich Ruins. I was very happy to see our guide knew a lot about the forest plants and explained how the people used some of those plants. Also, our tour guides along with the other staff were so friendly and professional that I don’t see why anyone would not want to do a trip with Slickrock.”

Exploring Belize Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich is located only ten miles from the Guatemalan border, not far from the Western Highway. This major ceremonial center peaked during the Classic period of the Maya and is home to 25 temples and palaces including the second tallest Mayan structure in Belize. From the top of this pyramid “El Castillo”, one is rewarded with a breathtaking view of three river valleys. View our Mayan ruins in Belize map to see where it is located.

Our guide grew up near this ruin, and still lives nearby. He is an expert on Mayan history, as he is a Mayan descendant himself! The restored areas of this huge city-state contain a ceremonial center, residences for the rulers of this civilization, a middle-class residential area, and the ubiquitous ballcourt complex. We explore as much of this city-state as is possible within our time constraints. Thanks to excellent on-going archaeological work, we get to see many different periods of construction.
