Adventure Island Itinerary – First Half Week

Adventure Island Itinerary

First Half-Week

6 night Belize vacation on a private island

Our Adventure Island at Glover’s Reef First Half package is the first half of our full week private island trip, and always starts on a Friday. You stay the first and last night in Belize City, with 4 nights at Slick Rock’s adventure lodge on Long Caye. We meet late in the day on Day 1, many participants are able to fly to Belize from their home in one day. However, we recommend you come one day early if you can (to avoid potential delays to your Belize arrival causing you to miss the boat to the island on Saturday.) This is fully explained on Our Hints for a Better Vacation page.

Our daily schedule is flexible and dependent on weather conditions. The exact itinerary varies from week to week. This description is how a typical trip might unfold.

Day One

Friday
ARRIVE BELIZE – INITIAL TRIP MEETING – OVERNIGHT BELIZE CITY

Fly to Belize City. Take a taxi to the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel for a 5:30 p.m. meeting, followed by dinner and overnight. Your guide will wait for everyone before starting the orientation, and attendance this evening is required.

If arriving early by one or more days, consult our recommended Belize City hotels or What to Do in Belize for longer trip extensions that we recommend.

Day Two

Saturday
TRANSPORT TO ISLAND – MOVE INTO CABANAS – SNORKEL ORIENTATION

After an early breakfast we walk to our dock two blocks while our luggage is driven. The boat leaves between 8 and 9 a.m., arriving just before lunch. It is a 3 – 3.5 hour ride (65 miles); we cross the Belize Barrier Reef at Tobacco Caye. More information about our private charter boat goes into more detail about this open sea crossing.

We start with a complete tour of our facility, Adventure Island at Glover’s Reef. Lunch is ready after the tour, and then you settle into your Belize cabana. By 1:30 or 2:00 we get back together for our first sport orientation: snorkeling! Everyone participates in this session, as well as the sea kayak orientation the next morning. After that all other sport orientations can be offered multiple times.

We start the snorkeling session with a review of gear and snorkel safety specific to our area. We then break into smaller groups, and swim to our closest snorkel spot for your first underwater experience at Glover’s Reef!

From now on everyone can snorkel as much as they like, as long as you run your snorkel plan by us first, and have a buddy to join you. Belize snorkeling trips are scheduled throughout the week, usually daily. View the map of our Belize snorkeling sites to see just how close the snorkeling is!

Day Three

Sunday
SEA KAYAK ORIENTATION – FIRST KAYAK/SNORKEL EXPEDITION – SURF KAYAK ORIENTATION – CERTIFIED DIVES – KAYAK FISHING

This morning we complete the sea kayak orientation, which starts off on one of the best Belize beaches, followed by a practice session in the water. We cover paddle strokes, getting in and out of the kayak without tipping over (so you can snorkel from your kayak), and we teach everyone how to rescue each other so you can paddle on your own with a buddy.

This session is the last mandatory activity. From now on you can choose what you want to do, no other sport orientation is required.

After lunch, one guide takes a group paddling to a nearby patch reef to try out what we just learned, while another guide offers surf kayaking instruction. All surfers start with kayaks, then move up through paddleboard surfing and finally board surfing. Experienced board surfers will not be disappointed as our surf boards provide great action.

Belize certified dives are offered this afternoon, and fishermen can fish anytime. We pay for your Belize fishing license so you can begin fishing right away. Independent kiteboarders can also kitesurf whenever conditions are good.

Day Four

Monday
DISCOVER SCUBA CLASSES – PADDLE AROUND THE ISLAND – KAYAK SNORKELING – WINDSURFING ORIENTATION

The first Discover Scuba course is offered this morning. This class allows beginners to learn to dive without becoming certified. More advanced classes are also available. Others go paddling around the island, which means you are paddling outside the atoll… exciting!

At anytime guests may snorkel with their buddy, and guides take anyone who wants to join him or her once or twice a day.

In the afternoon windsurfing lessons will be be offered, and surf kayaking orientation can be offered again for those who missed it the day before. Paddleboarding can also be offered. Once you complete each orientation you may continue to practice these sports with or without a guide for the rest of the week. We have a near-constant breeze and a perfect set of waves breaking just off our shore, as well as a calm lagoon perfect for learning new sports.

Day Five

Tuesday
PADDLE TO THE NEXT ISLAND FOR SNORKELING OR FISHING – KITESURFING LESSONS

Paddle five miles round-trip to Middle Caye to tour the Marine Research Center, a home base for visiting marine biologists. Once there we can tour the island, or go snorkeling at a really interesting patch reef right by this island. Fishermen will want bring their gear to fish the large bonefish flats that surround the island. We get back in time for a late lunch.

If you don’t want to paddle to Middle Caye, you can always just stay on the island. With a buddy you can do any of the sports you have already learned, or just read a book in your hammock.

Independent kiteboarders can kitesurf any time, or take we also offer kiteboarding lessons at our kiteboard school.

Day Six

Wednesday
KAYAK/SNORKEL – SURF KAYAKING – BOAT RIDE TO BELIZE CITY – CHECK INTO BELIZE CITY HOTEL

One group paddles to “Conch Central”, a nearby, shallow patch reef. If the surf is up, another group will be out riding the waves. The kayak surfers are very entertaining… yet another group spends the morning watching them from the surf dock.

Other options not yet mentioned include a downwind paddleboard trip to Southwest Caye 6 miles away, night snorkeling, full-moon paddling, and beginners learning the basics of kitesurfing Belize with our trainer kites.

After lunch we return to Belize City.

Our arrival time cannot be predicted since it depends on factors we cannot control. Therefore, guests should not make other plans for Saturday night, and our last night’s lodging is included in the trip price. You will not get back in time to catch an international flight. After checking into the Biltmore, guests are on their own for dinner.
