|Dear Slickrock Friends,
We have some good news, as of last Friday (19th November 2021). Alaskan Airlines have commenced flights to Belize from Los Angeles and Seattle, with flights parallel with our package start and finish dates.
Tickets can be purchased at alaskaair.com for flights twice per week for Seattle and four times per week for Los Angeles.
As we close in on 2021, it looks like the worst of the Covid storm is slowly moving, at least with regards to international travel.
What we expected to be a 12-week headache, has been a 20-month fight for survival. Through many sacrifices by the entire team, we are still here with a smile on our faces and ready to face the upcoming season, and beyond. Bigger, better, and more inclusive than ever before.
Big plans with our sister companies that would, or rather, will benefit the Slickrock team were unfortunately mothballed, again due to Covid.
I always try to see the sun beyond the grey clouds, and there is a glimmer of sunshine in the sky, which we will keep you updated on in the following months.
Cully and Lucy have been absolutely invaluable in their support and advice the past three years, and I am absolutely determined to carry on their legacy in a meaningful way, after putting so much blood, sweat, and tears into Slickrock since 1977, and 1986, respectively. Not only carry the torch, but develop the Belizean team to reap the reward of years upon years of hard work, dedication, and passion.
Cully will be back for the entire month of December, after a two-year break. Magdaleno (aka MJ) will be managing the island, as we move forward.
I know it is often said as a cliché when companies (in general) say they have a great team, but we honestly do have a nucleus of very special people at Slickrock. As I’ve said before in our monthly blogs, they are the true reason I was so determined to take Slickrock into it’s next chapter, rather than the island.
Whether extroverted, or introverted, our team make you feel like you are at a home from home, rather than any old resort. From a friendly hello as you grab a coffee, or go for a stroll in the morning whilst they are doing chores, to a night snorkel.
From cracking a coconut open for you, to making delicious key lime pie, windsurfing, to kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, to an evening lecture, there is so much more to our operation than any brochure or website could do it justice.
It is the essence, the people, the location, the sports, the country, the laid-back culture, the turtles nesting, frigate birds and pelicans swooping past as your hammock rocks on your cabana porch at sunrise.
Low impact infrastructure with rain water collection and filtration, solar panels, composting toilet, wind turbines, cohune thatch roofs, organic produce, the natural breeze, the waves whispering away as you sleep. The stars, the moon, and geckos calling when there’s rain en route.
My plan was always to help steer Slickrock into a new chapter, and flicker the metaphorical lighter into a flame, to put the fire in the bellies of the team, for many moons to come. We are merely custodians of the island, and you are our guests, our friends, and we would love to welcome you to our little paradise, and become part of the Slickrock family.
As we get back on track, I will be more behind the scenes and allow the Belizean team to develop into the roles I always knew they could. I am proud that we are now Belizean-based, Belizean-managed, and as those glimmers of light appear, and Covid’s grey clouds slowly pass by, they will finally be rewarded properly.
We are offering 10% discount for new bookings for 17th December, only, should you fancy waking up to a Christmas Day sunrise. Several weeks are filling up on a daily basis, although we have spaces between 14th January – 3rd June 2022.
The office is open 9 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday (Belize time), and we’d be more than happy to speak with you about any questions that you may have.
All the best,
