Running in Belize

running in belize

Years ago we cleared a path around the west end of the island that connects with our main path on the east end to provide easy access to the whole island for our guests. More recently we have also assembled information about all the plants and animals on the island into a self guided nature tour along this west end trail, which has been enormously popular.

The island loop trail has recently become heavily used as a jogging path, and when connected with the east end loop it makes a wonderful trail that is about 2/3 of a mile in length. Every morning we see guests jogging the loop before the heat of the day sets in.

You can see the jogging path in this aerial view of the island.

Veronique Maheux, who joined us in April with her family, just sent us a GPS track of the island trail, along with a profile of the run. We love this! We have often wondered how high “Mount Long Caye” is, and now we can see it’s about 26 and a half feet high! We had no idea, we always said it’s 9.2 feet high (just so it sounded like we really knew). The highest spot on the island is on the path, and you jog right over it. So if you are a runner, when you come to our island, don’t forget your jogging shoes!
