There is a sand bar located a hundred yards off the end of our island, Long Caye at Glover’s Reef in Belize. The sandbar is atop a long shoal that once was an extension of the island, but was destroyed by Hurricane Mitch’s waves in 1998. This sand bar is an intermittent feature which occasionally disappears and then comes back according to the pattern of the wind and waves at any particular point in time. We have watched the sandbar slowly migrate over a small reef, covering it completely, and it is continuing to move towards another.
We often stage snorkel trips to nearby reefs from the sandbar, and conduct kite trainer lessons there as well. However, one of our most popular events at the sand bar has become our weekly sunset cocktail parties, where we shuttle people out to the bar on our skiff along with chairs and cocktail supplies, and then hang out for an hour or so while the sun sets over the horizon. It is great fun to have so many people on this small speck of sand, partying down while an amazing sunset unfolds to the west![photo by Jasmine Ardeshiri]
