Question: My certification is with another organization other than PADI. Does the Long Caye Dive Shop accept my certification so I can go diving on your trips?

Answer: PADI, NAUI, SSI and ACUC are other scuba certification organizations that we accept. Persons with these certifications may dive as certified divers diving with us. If they want to take a course, they would receive the certification from PADI.

Looking for scuba diving schools in Belize? Long Caye Dive and Gift Shop, located just down the beach from Slickrock’s facility on Long Caye, is a PADI scuba center with tanks, compressor, and two dive boats. Guests often take time off from our activities to go scuba diving. In addition to dives for certified divers, they provide Discover Scuba/Resort courses that permit non-divers to train and continue to dive for the rest of the week. They also offer many advanced scuba courses. Long Caye Dive Shop is a certified member of the PADI International Resort Association and is a full-service PADI training facility. Certified divers MUST present their cards and attend a check-out session.

We often see hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles while diving and snorkeling.

All students must be physically fit to dive. If there is any medical concern that a potential student may have the dive shop requests that the student visit the PADI website to obtain a copy of the PADI medical release form. The student’s doctor needs to fill this out; PADI no longer recognizes a simple note from the doctor allowing the student to dive. Areas of concern for diving fitness include: diabetes, respiratory, circulation, heart, major surgery and asthma.

To download the form: (http://www.padi.com/english/common/courses/forms/.

Long Caye Dive Shop. There is a minimum age limit of 10 for scuba diving, although the age limit is under the discretion of the Dive Instructor. The age limit for the Bubble Maker course is 8 years of age, which has a 6-foot depth limit and the course takes one-half day. Non divers or snorkelers may not join divers on the boat while divers are diving or taking courses. Therefore, single parents may not go scuba diving unless they have another adult in their party that can supervise their kids while they dive.

Diving on Long Caye

  • All dives are guided from boats; no shore diving available
  • Single divers are guaranteed a buddy because a Dive Master accompanies every dive
  • Divers are grouped together. If only one person is interested in diving, diving may not be offered every time the single diver wants to go
  • If only one person is interested in a course, the course is almost always available but not guaranteed (inquire for status)
  • If you are a certified diver but have not been diving in a long time, you can take the Discover Scuba course as a refresher. If the course is already being offered to others, the will allow certified divers to sit in on the lecture portion for free.
  • Prices include tanks, air, weights, transport
  • Divers supply their own mask, fins, snorkel
  • Weights are simple strap belts with 2 and 4 lb. weights threaded onto the belt
  • Weight belts are provided for all divers, but are not available for rent for non-diving activities
  • Wetsuits are provided for all courses (very limited sizes available), but are not available to rent for non-diving activities
  • Limited dive lights are available to rent for night scuba dives, but cannot be guaranteed available for all, you should bring your own light if you want to night dive. Dive lights are not available to rent to snorkelers
  • Dive locations, time of dives, and duration of dives will be at the discretion of dive shop management
  • Diving is often unavailable on Saturday, this is a transfer day and staff may not be available to take guests diving

Divers Alert Network

Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit medical and research organization dedicated to the safety and health of recreational scuba divers and associated with Duke University Medical Center. DAN is supported by the largest association of recreational divers in the world.

Founded in 1980, DAN has served as a lifeline for the scuba industry by operating diving's only 24-hour emergency hotline, a lifesaving service for injured divers. Additionally, DAN operates a diving medical information line, conducts vital diving medical research, and develops and provides a number of educational programs for everyone from beginning divers to medical professionals.

It costs $29/year to join, and for an additional $25-70 per year you have a choice of a variety of insurance plans. Divers should consider this excellent coverage.
