Belize is in Central America, a tiny country on the Western edge of the Caribbean Sea, formally known as British Honduras. Belize is located below Mexico, east of Guatemala, and north of Honduras.
Blessed with many natural wonders, Belize contains rainforest-cloaked mountains, hidden river gorges, Mayan ruins, numerous wildlife preserves, some of the largest cave systems in the world, and the world's second longest coral barrier reef. For PADI certifications that rival Caye Caulker dive courses, see our scuba section.

Belize has 6 districts, which are more or less the same thing as a county. They are, north to south, Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo. Sometimes the district name is synonymous with the name of the major city in that district. For example, if a Belizean says he is "going to Stann Creek", he means Dangriga.
There are 3 atolls in Belize, labeled in this map as well. To find out more about the Belize atolls, visit this web page on our site.
The #1 marine destination in Belize is Ambergris Caye, which is the largest island in the country. Here you will find hundreds of hotels and lodges.
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second longest in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Its 200-mile long coral wall protects the country from storms, and is the reason there is no surf in Belize except out past the Barrier Reef.
